Old Dhaka - Karwan Bazaar

Thursday 21st February is a public holiday in Bangladesh, celebrating Mother language day (and so also Independence from Pakistan, and remembering those who died). For us it was a chance to take a day trip into old Dhaka without fear of a demonstration or rally. We didn't realise that it would be a chance to drive virtually traffic free round the city, which was a joy! Our journey from Gulshan took about 20 mins, when usually it would take 1.5 - 2hrs in regular traffic. We had arranged to take a driver and guide from a local agency Travelers World, which was worth it, as we visited areas we wouldn't have gone alone.

This is Karwan Bazaar - the big, bustling wholesale market. There was very little room to walk round with the guys walking round with huge baskets laden with vegetables, bike carts, shoppers, trucks etc
