A regular reader of the blog, asked me about the smells of Dhaka, which we haven't mentioned yet.
I regularly went on walks with friends when the weather was cooler - this is Baridhara lake. Looks quite picturesque.
but it is almost a dead lake - these are fish gulping for air, as there is not enough oxygen in the water. It smells pretty sludgy and dirty, but not actively unpleasant.
However much of Dhaka does have a rather distinctive smell, and that is of stale urine.
this is a common sight all over the city, as men cop a squat at any wall or drain as is necessary (what the women do, as ever, I have no idea). The squatting is related to the traditional dhoti (sarong type wrap) that the men wear (with no underwear for ease of access), but trouser wearers also squat
The markets in general don't smell too bad, only the areas where waste is collected and sorted, and the livestock is kept before slaughter are really awful - even the fish or meat areas aren't overwhelming as you might imagine.
oh yes, and if you click on a picture, it should open so that you can scroll through a screen with the photos only - a bit larger than we post here.
