Much to our drivers puzzlement on Saturday we went into old Dhaka (Puran Dhaka) to an area known to expats as bicycle street. So do you want to buy a bicycle he asked - no, we just want to look, why don't you go and visit the Pink Palace then I will take you. No - we want to go to Nazira Bazaar....
Some quick snaps on the way show that not all garment factories are without fire escape stairs externally... I think the owner of the factory where the recent tragedy took place cannot claim ignorance about the need for emergency exits.
we left early to avoid the traffic, and were successful, it just meant we got there an hour before any shops were open. So we walked and wandered, and said good morning to lots of people, of course by now we were nowhere near bicycle street...
Stupidly we had also eaten a big breakfast, since the breads, dhals and curries being cooked up everywhere looked delicious. So at about 10.30 we stopped for tea
local cinema - the ladies are beautiful, and the baddies are bad grrr
Nazira Bazaar / BRTC bus depot area
clothes inside the market
an area with of sanitary ware - such a lovely range of bright and interesting colours..
this is a common scene all over the city at the moment, big works are taking place to do with water/sewerage, our street has also been opened up since today. What we haven't seen is them performing the works, and then filling the holes back up, many streets involve slaloming from side to side between the holes now
