About today

I finally thought I'd capture my day - not a special day, and not entirely typical as I'm not usually handicraft shopping on a daily basis ...

7.30 - drag myself out of bed - sun is shining

there was a 2.15 am mosquito, and I didn't get back to sleep until almost 4.00

this was pretty much the first mossy we have had in the house for weeks, so we've got out of the habit of putting our net down

8.00 - still finishing my tea and toast (with marmalade) as Lon leaves for work
Granary toast - after finding Granary flour at the British Commissary - yum

9.00 - Go to the Nordic club for aquaaerobics
I'm the only one who has turned up, so go for a swim instead

there is a group of about 15 regulars who go to aquaaerobics - there are only about 4 of us in country at the moment, but usually there are 2 or 3 and we muddle along without an instructor

empty changing room for a change
10.00 - drive back to the appartment.

Had to go home and get some cash, as I'd forgotten that I'd given all mine to the driver yesterday for petrol.
stop for a drink, and some laundry before heading out to Banani

10.30 Visit a new (to me) handicraft shop Viator , and a newly opened outlet of a known store Kumudini
exquisite (and expensive) sarees

Drop by a local veg shop, as I only need potatoes - its closed for refurbishment which is frustrating

End up going to the supermarket - happy to pick up some potatoes, and fresh low-fat milk (I haven't seen any all Ramanadan)

12.00 back home, make a quick "freezer soup" - I'm clearing out one of our freezers, as it is not on the generator.  Today we have veg base (I freeze a carrot / onion / celery mix in batches when I get hold of celery), some local smoked streaky bacon (not very good), bean stock from a big pot of beans I cooked up a while back, and some Thai frankfurters which turned out to have quite a kick.

speaking of generators, ours and the whole streets is on.  The apartment feels hot and stuffy, since none of the air conditioners work on the generator.  The air is thrumming with vibration until at 13.00 the electricity comes back on

mmm not bad with homemade bread

13.00  After Lon goes back to work, settle down with a cup of tea and play a frustrating game of Candy Crush on my ipad

13.30 - spoiler alert - put some Gamza's on to wash that I bought as gifts - they are a bit like a giant tea towel -handy for travelling - but they smelled a bit funky

some cloth I bought for getting clothes made after summer

14.30 off out again

ours is the only car in the garage today

traffic on Gulshan Avenue is relatively light today as its during Ramadan. It's still stop start and honking though

Lots of restaurants have special Iftar menus and decoration (iftar is the breaking of the fast at sunset 18.50 or thereabouts  locally FYI)

14.50 arrive at the Bonded Warehouse - this is a very rickety lift, up to the fifth floor

pick up some wine, they don't have any Bacardi, or beer and nor do we

cheque book, and the paper authorising us to buy tax free alcohol

15.15 - back road towards home
it's a bit narrow in places though

Tented tea stalls - there are people who do not fast during Ramadan - there are always lots of feet visible

15.45 unloaded and time to sit down with  TV, a cup of tea and some tapestry

Apples taste better when cut up

17.30 Lon home!
18.00 - dinner prep - Helen has done the boring part so the veg is peeled, and onions chopped

shiny new cooker

18.45 - savoury mince and mashed swede/carrot/ potato
not really seasonally appropriate, but emptying the freezer, and its almost always hot here too!

that's pretty much it for the night - sofa and bad TV, and surfing the net
